How to Set Up Missed-Call Text Back for a Small Contractor (Step-by-Step)

Updated October 13, 2026 · Some links may be affiliate links. How we make money.

A homeowner with a leaking roof calls you. You’re on a ladder and can’t pick up. They hang up and call the next roofer on Google. That job is gone.

Missed-call text back fixes this. When you miss a call, the caller gets a text within seconds, something like “Sorry we missed you! This is Mike at Summit Roofing. What can we help with?” The conversation keeps going while you finish the job.

Here are three ways to set it up, from easiest to cheapest. All prices come from official vendor pages, checked October 13, 2026.

Option 1: Use an AI receptionist (easiest)

An AI receptionist answers the call instead of letting it ring out, then texts or books as needed. Several include text features:

  • Jobber Receptionist, $29/mo add-on to a Jobber plan. Jobber says it “can even text back callers who hang up.” It also answers questions, books visits and transfers urgent calls. You need a Jobber subscription (from $29/mo billed annually, per Jobber’s pricing page).
  • Rosie, from $49/mo. Every plan sends appointment links by text, and the $149 Scale plan can text callers during the call.
  • AI-Receptionist.com, from $14/mo. The $39 Starter plan adds “Post-Call Actions,” which can text you a summary when a caller sounds like a new lead. Texts to callers are capped by plan (for example, 50 outbound texts a month on Starter).

Best for: contractors who’d rather have the call answered than just get a text. For a full comparison, see Best AI receptionist for roofers in 2026.

Option 2: Use what’s in your field service app

If you already pay for Jobber or Housecall Pro, check what’s included before buying anything new:

  • Jobber Grow and up include two-way text messaging with clients, plus the Receptionist add-on described above.
  • Housecall Pro lists add-ons including Voice (“manage calls, set up flows”) and CSR AI (“AI answers every call and chat, day or night”) on its pricing page. We couldn’t confirm the add-on prices publicly, so ask their sales team.

Best for: contractors already in one of these apps who want everything in one inbox.

Option 3: Build it yourself with Twilio (cheapest per text)

If you’re comfortable with a little tech, Twilio lets you build a text-back system that costs pennies:

Cost itemTwilio US price (Oct 2026)
Local phone number$1.15/month
Outbound SMS$0.0083 per segment + carrier fee
Carrier fee, outbound SMS$0.0035 (AT&T) to $0.005 (Verizon) per segment
Inbound SMS$0.0083 per segment (+ carrier fee on some networks)
Failed message fee$0.001

So 100 text-backs a month costs roughly $1.15 + about $1.30 in messages. That’s before A2P 10DLC registration fees, which US carriers require for business texting from a regular 10-digit number. Twilio notes these fees but doesn’t list the amounts on the SMS pricing page, so budget for them.

How it works, in short: a Twilio number receives your forwarded missed calls and automatically texts the caller back, with replies routed to your phone. It takes some technical setup and A2P 10DLC registration before you can text customers.

Watch out for: you own the setup. If something breaks on a Saturday, there’s no support line. Also, you need A2P 10DLC registration done before you text customers, or carriers may block your messages.

Step 1 for every option: forward only your missed calls

All three options work by forwarding the calls you don’t answer. Your phone still rings first, and only unanswered calls go to the text-back system.

On Verizon (per Verizon’s call forwarding FAQ):

  • *71 + 10-digit number: forward only calls you don’t answer.
  • *72 + 10-digit number: forward all calls.
  • *73: turn forwarding off.

Verizon says there’s no monthly fee for call forwarding on most plans. Forwarded calls use your plan minutes, and call forwarding doesn’t forward text messages.

On other carriers: the codes are different. Search “[your carrier] conditional call forwarding” or ask the vendor. Jobber, Rosie and AI-Receptionist.com all say they support forwarding from your existing number.

Step 2: Write a text that gets replies

Short, personal and with one question works best. Templates:

General:

Hi, this is [Name] from [Company]. Sorry I missed your call, I’m on a job right now. What can I help you with?

Roofing:

Hi, it’s [Name] with [Company] Roofing. Sorry I missed you! Is this about a leak, storm damage, or a new roof? Reply here and I’ll get back to you today.

After hours:

Thanks for calling [Company]! We’re closed for the day but will call you first thing tomorrow. If it’s an emergency like an active leak, reply URGENT.

Tips:

  • Use your name, not “our team.” People reply to people.
  • Ask one easy question. “Leak, storm damage, or new roof?” is easier to answer than “How can we help?”
  • Don’t send links in the first text. Get the reply first, then send your booking link.
  • Don’t add these people to marketing texts without their permission.

Step 3: Test it before you trust it

Call your own line from another phone during the day, after hours and on a weekend, and confirm the text arrives quickly and replies reach you.

Step 4: Follow up within the hour

The text buys you time, not the job. Set a rule for yourself: call back every text-back lead within 60 minutes during working hours. Tools like Jobber can also automate follow-ups on quotes once you’ve sent an estimate.

Which option should you pick?

  • “I just want it to work”: an AI receptionist like Rosie ($49/mo) or AI-Receptionist.com (from $14/mo).
  • “I already use Jobber”: add Receptionist for $29/mo.
  • “I’m technical and want it nearly free”: Twilio, with a budget for 10DLC registration.

Prices and carrier codes were checked on official vendor pages on October 13, 2026, and can change. Confirm before you set it up. Nothing here is legal advice.

FAQ

What is missed-call text back?

It's an automation that sends a text to anyone whose call you didn't answer, usually within a minute, so the lead hears from you before they call the next contractor.

How do I forward only missed calls on Verizon?

According to Verizon, dial *71 followed by the 10-digit number to forward only calls you don't answer. *72 plus the number forwards all calls, and *73 turns forwarding off. Other carriers use different codes, so check your carrier's support page.

How much does it cost to send texts with Twilio?

Twilio's US pricing page (October 2026) lists $0.0083 per outbound SMS segment plus carrier fees of roughly $0.0035 to $0.005, and $1.15/month for a local number. US business texting also requires A2P 10DLC registration, which has its own onboarding fees.

Can I keep my business phone number?

Yes. All three methods in this guide use call forwarding, so customers keep calling the number they already have.

Is it legal to text people who called me?

Replying to someone who just called your business is generally a normal business communication, but US carriers require registered business texting (A2P 10DLC) for app-sent messages, and you should not add callers to marketing texts without consent. This isn't legal advice.
